Washington Capitals kick off training camp with major roster changes on the ice trucc

ARLINGTON, Va. (7News) — Hockey season is back in the DMV region.

The Washington Capitals were on the ice Thursday morning for the start of training camp.

The team was very active in the offseason, overhauling roughly a third of its roster.

The big new face on the roster is Pierre-Luc Dubois, who provides a new look down the middle, helping fill the void left by Nicklas Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov.

For Dubois, this will be his fourth team in four years. He has seven years left on the contract Washington traded for this offseason.

Dubois has the skill and the ability to be a star in D.C. It's a fresh start he's embracing.

"It's one of those teams that for the past 15 years the Capitals have always been a good team. They have won a lot of hockey games," Dubois said. "I think I can bring some experience, but also help with the younger guys. I'm really excited to learn. There's so much depth on this team, so much talent. I think it's going to be an exciting season."

You can't talk about the Capitals without mentioning Alex Ovechkin.

This week, Ovechkin turned 39, entering his 20th NHL season. He is only 42 goals away from hockey history.

Ovechkin is trying to break Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal-scoring record of 894.

The Caps open the 2024-2025 season on Saturday, October 12 at home against the New Jersey Devils.
