Johnson has been 'unleashing the fury' as the voice of the Caps for 25 seasons
WASHINGTON — Wes Johnson may not be a name you recognize, but if you are a fan of the Washington Capitals hockey team, you certainly recognize his voice. Johnson has been the team's public address announcer for 25 years and is best known for calling on fans to "unleash the fury."
Johnson has reportedly been hospitalized in intensive care following a medical emergency in an Atlanta hotel room. According to an online fundraiser organized by friends and family, Johnson was in Atlanta hosting a benefit for the National Alzheimer's Association.
When Johnson did not show up for the event on Jan. 22, Johnson was discovered unconscious in his room. Organizer Bill Glasser said Johnson was "barely alive" when he was found, and emergency crews struggled to find a pulse.
According to Glasser, Johnson is now fighting for his life in the ICU. It is not clear what happened to him.
The verified GoFundMe page is hoping to raise $50,000 for the Johnson family to cover medical and other expenses while Johnson is unable to work. The fundraiser has raised more then $30,000 in just 12 hours.
Beyond the ice, Johnson has made a career as an actor, voice-over artist, comedian and cartoonist. He provided voice over talent for several Bethesda Games Studios video game titles, including the Elder Scrolls series and the Fallout franchise.
