Washington Capitals fall to Buffalo Sabres in shootout after tying game late trucc

   

The Washington Capitals fell to the Buffalo Sabres 4-3 in the shootout. Despite the loss, John Carlson made franchise history by recording his 700th career point.

JJ Peerka struck first for the Sabres for his 11th goal of the season at 4:42. The Caps would then go to the power play as former Capital Nicolas Aube Kubel was called for holding against Aliaksei Protas. Tom Wilson made them pay at 6:10 wih a power play goal for his 17th of the seaosn. Jakob Chychrun notched his 17th assist on the year while Dylan Strome had his 33rd assist on the secondary.

1-1 was the score after one with Buffalo outshooting Washington 10-6 in the first 20. The only other two penalties in the period were on the Caps with Protas holding at 1:02 and Brandon Duhaime called for roughing at 19:58 to carry over into the middle stanza.

In the second the Sabres went in front at 1:07 with a goal from Alex Tuch for his 13th goal of the season. Tom Wilson then added his 18th goal of the season to tie it right back up at 11:29. Aliaksei Protas had the primary for his 17th while John Carlson had the secondary for his 22nd.

At 12:49 the Sabres answered with Tage Thompson's 19th goal of the season. It came on the power play at 12:49. Aliaksei Protas would tie it back up in the third period with his 18th goal of the season at 15:47. John Carlson notched his 700th career point with his 23rd assist on the season while Pierre-Luc Dubois added his 26th apple.

Shots were even at nine apiece in the second period while the Caps had the edge in shots 10-4 in the third. The game would require overtime and in the three on three the Sabres outshot the Caps 5-3. Washington had the edge in shots 28-27 overall but the game would require a shootout.

Thompson would get stopped. PLD would score for the Caps. JackQuinn got stopped as did Dylan Strome. Alex Tuch would score. John Carlson got stopped. JJ Peterka scored while Jakob Chychrun got sopped.

The Capitals will host the Vancouver Canucks this Wednesday night at 7 p.m. on Monumental Sports Network 2.
