As the ITV dating show celebrates 10 years on screen, look back at one of its most famous moments.
As Love Island reaches its milestone 10th anniversary, the ITV2 dating show is set for a look back at some of its key moments over the years. From romance to rows, the headline-grabbing reality series is always a conversation starter - including Camilla Thurlow and Jonny Mitchell's feminism row in 2017.
Thurlow, a former bomb disposal expert, coupled up with Mitchell on day six and stayed with him for three weeks, but it all started to fall apart when they got into a heated disagreement about feminism.
It proved to be one of season three's stand-out moments, prompting discussion outside the show and eventually leading to Thurlow finding her husband in late arrival Jamie Jewitt.
What was Camilla and Jonny's feminism discussion?
Thurlow and Mitchell had been getting to know each other better, with viewers enjoying their budding romance until one evening Mitchell revealed he always liked to pay on dates, saying: "I'd feel almost emasculated if a girl paid. I wouldn't let you pay. I'd feel really f**king awkward."
As he noticed Thurlow looking shocked, he said: "You're a feminist, aren't you?" She shot back: "Shouldn't we all be feminists? Surely you believe in equality?"
Some back and forth about equality followed, before Mitchell said: "The majority of feminists, like real feminists, believe in almost a slope towards them rather than towards men."
Thurlow attempted to explain the issue to him as she said: "I don't think it's that, but I think it's difficult for men to see that there's been several generations which have been preferential towards men, and therefore to redress the balance there has to be in some way an active movement towards equality."
Mitchell was shown pulling faces during her explanation and then asked: "Do women not have equality? How so?"
"No," Thurlow patiently told him. "If you look at the number of females in high level jobs, top tier jobs..." as Mitchell interrupted: "Prime ministers, some women."
She said: "Sure, and then how many other female MPs are there?" as he argued: "There's enough, I mean it's not like it's a boys club, I'm sure they just choose who's more qualified for the job."
Thurlow asked him: "Do you think truly that we've achieved equality in the UK? Do you honestly believe that women have equal opportunities?"
Mitchell replied: "I believe women almost have more opportunities."
The aftermath
Thurlow appeared to see a new side to her partner during the discussion, and later spoke to cameras explaining why she felt so strongly about feminism. But Mitchell, in his own diary room chat, claimed his views were not controversial and nothing to get upset about.
It marked the beginning of the end for the couple - they tried to move on, but Mitchell eventually dropped Thurlow in favour of new arrival Tyla Carr, leaving her devastated.
She said: "For me it was all real. Jonny was never part of the game in my eyes and the feelings that I had, it took me a long time to allow myself to feel that way again and so it’s always sad once something ends like that."
After leaving the show, Thurlow said of the feminism disagreement: "When someone brings something up and I disagree with them, I will always state my case. I don’t want that to descend into tears and tantrums, but when there’s a chance to voice your opinions in a calm way, I would always do that. That’s the way you learn from other people as well."
What happened to Camilla and Jonny?
Mitchell's switch to Carr didn't last long - he had brief partnerships with Danielle Sellers and Amber Davies, before being dumped from the villa on day 38.
But things began to look up for Thurlow, who got together with new arrival Jamie Jewitt on day 34 and the pair finished as series runners-up.
Thurlow and Jewitt are one of the few Love Island couples to have stayed together long term - they have three children and got married in 2021.
Meanwhile, Mitchell made a brief appearance on Celebrity Big Brother in 2017 but has largely stayed out of the limelight. He works as a business director and appears to be in a relationship.
Love Island: A Decade of Love airs on ITV2 at 9pm on Sunday, 1 June. Love Island is set to return to ITV2 in June.
