Ashley Darby's tribute to Roberta Flack didn't hit the right notes.
During a FOX 5 DC appearance on Thursday, April 3, the Real Housewives of Potomac star, 36, stopped by to sing the late Flack's iconic song"Killing Me Softly with His Song."
The performance was in promotion of Darby's "first exhibition at the legendary Mr. Henry’s in Southeast, DC.," the caption for the Instagram clip read ahead of her show on Saturday, April 5.
The reality star's pitchy rendition caught the attention of many online — including Tony Award winner Melba Moore.
Moore, 79, shared a gif of Aretha Franklin from an interview saying "Great gowns, beautiful gowns," where the late singer seemingly shaded Taylor Swift's vocals, perhaps as a nod to Darby's colorful outfit.
Viewers also shared their thoughts on the cover of the 1973 song. "Killing me softly indeed 🤦🏾♀️," one user wrote. "This is the type of confidence and audacity I aspire to have," another fan said. "Wow. Too much confidence, not enough talent," a third fan agreed.
"Roberta DID NOT ask for this," someone chimed in, while another wrote: "Roberta Flack just passed away and now she is turning in her grave."
Flack, who was best known for "Killing Me Softly with His Song" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," died on Feb. 24. She was 88 years old. No cause of death was reported at the time, but Flack was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in November 2022.
"We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning February 24, 2025," a statement read. "She died peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator."
Darby will be performing at the venue on Saturday, April 5 from 8 to 11 p.m. with ticket proceeds going to House of Ruth. "This special performance will showcase her incredible vocal talent, bringing to life an eclectic mix of music that spans genres and generations," Mr. Henry's website reads.
