Prospect Owen Martin Aspires to Break Alex Ovechkin’s All-Time NHL Goals Record trucc
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin made history this past season, overtaking Wayne Gretzky as the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer. It inspired players all across the world, and now, future prospects also have their eye on the prize.
Among them: Spokane Chiefs forward and NHL draft prospect Owen Martin.
The Score surveyed several of this year's NHL draft prospects, asking a variety of questions regarding their aspirations, including which record they'd like to own at the end of their career.
A couple of players said they'd want to win the most Stanley Cups, but Martin went off the chart, saying that he would like to have the most goals in NHL history at the end of his career.
"Seeing Alex Ovechkin break that goals record this year was pretty cool, so I think that experience would be pretty cool," Martin said. "Probably the goals record."
Ovechkin broke the record on April 6, 2025, against the New York Islanders, beating Ilya Sorokin on the power play for his 895th career goal. He finished the year with 897 total goals and is three away from 900, and is expected to build on the total even further in his 21st season.
Martin is ranked 54th among all North American skaters and is projected to go a bit later in the upcoming draft. He's a hard-working forward known for his two-way play and positioning, as well as his defensive awareness.
In 39 games with the Spokane Chiefs, where he played with Washington prospect Andrew Cristall, Martin finished the year with 13 goals and 21 assists for 34 points.
The 2025 NHL Draft starts on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
