With the calendar soon to flip to August and training camp drawing closer, a couple of Washington Capitals players have made their way back to the ice.

Logan Thompson and Matt Roy, two of the team’s principal offseason additions last summer, are the first members of the team to begin informal workouts at MedStar Capitals Iceplex.

Per Monumental Sports Network’s Tarik El-Bashir, the two donned Capitals practice sweaters as they participated in drills run by goaltending coach Scott Murray.

Thompson, 28, is headed into his second season with the Capitals after winning the club’s number-one netminder role this past year. The Calgary native finished fourth in 2025 Vezina Trophy voting for the NHL’s best goaltender after posting a 31-6-6 record with a 2.49 goals-against average, a .910 save percentage, and two shutouts.

After signing a six-year, $35.1 million contract extension with the Capitals last January, Thompson has stayed in the DC area this summer. He served as a guest coach alongside Braden Holtby at development camp earlier this month and participated in an autograph signing with John Carlson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Al Iafrate in Southern Maryland this past weekend.

Roy, 30, played in 69 games for the Capitals in his first season with the club after signing a six-year, $34.5 million contract last summer. The veteran rearguard recorded 24 points (3g, 21a) and averaged the third-most minutes per game (19:53) on the team.

Thompson and Roy were joined on the ice by former Hershey Bears winger and current Dynamo Minsk forward Sam Anas as well as Ottawa Senators forward Hayden Hodgson. Anas is a Potomac, Maryland, native who is home from Belarus for the summer, while Hodgson is likely in the DC area as he is dating Capitals assistant coach Kirk Muller’s daughter, Kira Muller.

The Capitals have yet to reveal the exact dates for their 2025 Training Camp. Last year’s camp began on September 19.
