The Washington Capitals lost one of their top four defensemen late in Tuesday afternoon’s 3-1 victory over the Boston Bruins.
Martin Fehervary left the win in the third period after being accidentally high sticked in the face by Tom Wilson. Wilson spun around while chasing a loose puck and unknowingly whacked his teammate in the side of the head with 14:13 left in regulation.
The 25-year-old rearguard immediately dropped to his knees and was in apparent pain as the on-ice officials stopped play to get him medical attention. Washington’s head athletic trainer, Jason Serbus, came onto the ice and applied a towel to the right side of Fehervary’s face. The smooth-skating Slovak returned to the bench and went down the tunnel into the Capitals’ locker room.
He did not return for the remainder of the game, skating 14:10 of ice time before the injury.
Fehervary has played in every game for the Capitals this season, recording 7 points (7a) in 37 outings. He ranks fourth on the team in average time on ice per game (19:24), just one second behind Matt Roy (19:25).
Head coach Spencer Carbery did not provide an update on Fehervary’s status after the game. Washington has two extra defensemen on their roster: Alex Alexeyev and Dylan McIlrath.
The Capitals will practice at noon on Wednesday before hosting the Minnesota Wild at Capital One Arena on Thursday night.
