After eight “chaotic” weeks of being married to man-baby Adrian Araouzou, Awhina Rutene has revealed how her body changed during the MAFS Australia experiment.
Awhina was one of the first brides we met at the onset of season 12, and while her groom, Adrian, seemed to be her type initially, he grew more and more unlikeable with each subsequent episode. There was that drama over not writing a letter and his relationship with Sierah Swepstone, but the show is far from over and we’re set for even more scandal.
Obviously, being married to a walking red flag comes with its own hazards, and now Awhina has spoken to the physical and emotional toll the experiment took on her body.
Awhina gained weight during her marriage to MAFS’ Adrian
We’ve seen Awhina shed tears a few times in the episodes dropped in the UK, but MAFS also took its pound of flesh and she put on weight because of the stress.
“I gained 8kg in the experiment, so none of my clothes fit,” Awhina told Yahoo. “I actually gained 6kg in the first six weeks, it was like a kilo a week in the first six weeks. When we went to the publicity day, I didn’t fit into my wedding dress – and my wedding dress was loose on my wedding day. So they had to pin it up at the back.”
Awhina recalled how, during filming, her cortisol levels were extremely high and that resulted in massive fluid retention, which in turn impacted her weight. Her son didn’t recognise her when she went home.
She continued: “I’d been on fight or flight mode almost every day. It was a chaotic arguing situation. My face had blown up drastically, I can’t even tell you. When I got home, my son said to me, ‘You look different, mummy. ’ That’s how much inflammation there was.”
Coming out of the experiment in a healthy relationship would have softened the blow, but in the same interview, Awhina spoke to MAFS being a waste of time and energy.
“It took such a physical toll on me and an emotional toll; it wasn’t worth being there. Whereas when we lived in those lighter moments, it was easier for me. I chose the easier route, because when I chose the hard route, he chose to stay anyway,” she added.
Someone please get this woman a decent man, she deserves it!
