Warning: this story contains spoilers from Love Is Blind season 8.

Sara Carton is opening up about the aftermath of her Love Is Blind split from Ben Mezzenga.

The pair made it to their wedding day on Love Is Blind season 8, but when it came time to say "I do," Sara said she couldn't marry Ben because she's "always wanted a partner to be on the same wavelength" and Ben wasn't meeting her requirements. In response, Ben, 28, offered up another solution: stay with Sara and continue to "grow" their relationship.

Sara appeared caught off guard by his suggestion, awkwardly laughing and telling him, "We'll see." She later told PEOPLE that she found his response to be "disrespectful" and couldn't see herself dating him after the split.

"With the whole entire concept of 'you walk away forever,' I was like, that's disrespectful, in a way, of what we signed up for and the whole entire point of why we're here," she said. "Also, me saying 'no' to a marriage, why would I continue dating someone? If you're going to say 'no' to that, why even continue the relationship?"

However, after that day, the two continued to live together for approximately two weeks, Sara revealed on the season 8 reunion on March 9. Then, right as they were planning to move in together in Nashville for her new temporary job, Ben ended things out of the blue, she claimed.

Now, Sara is opening up to PEOPLE about what really went down.

"After the wedding day, with all my hesitations I knew, I was like, I can't say 'yes' to a marriage today," she says. "But naturally, I'm constantly hoping that things could work or maybe without all the chaos of not living a normal life right now, but later, being able to get back into our routines... I was thinking possibly it could work."

So Sara stayed the course.

"We continued to live together for a week or two after the wedding. And one day, he dropped me," she continues. "We had a discussion of us being together, and that one day... he removed me from Find My Friends. I didn't hear much from him because he was out with friends drinking, which is fine. He was going to a Twins game, having fun. But I didn't hear much from him, saw that he removed me from Find My Friends, and that's when it told me the most."

That gave Sara "the most clarity of who Ben is," she reveals. "I was shocked and I felt super duped that he just waited for the time just to drop me. But I mean, it all made sense with everything that was coming to my attention throughout all of filming."

She adds, "He was like, 'Oh, I thought we were broken up.' I'm like, 'That was never the discussion. It was bizarre. It was crazy."

Prior to this, Sara says she had seen several "red flags" in Ben's behavior that made her question if he was truly husband material or on the show for the right reasons. The concerns included a video that surfaced on TikTok, showing a woman crying over a man's alleged actions of mistreatment, which he later admitted was about him, and claims he handed out YouTube business cards to girls to promote his page.

"The TikTok was huge, so that told me I needed to learn a lot more about Ben than what I already know," Sara says. "I needed to ask him the hard questions."

As a result, "I was questioning if he was there for the right reasons," she admits. "I don't doubt that we had a good connection because we really did. I wouldn't have said 'yes' if I didn't feel like we had a good connection. But after a while with everything happening and then the YouTube cards and then my friends telling me about their experiences with him at the U, it just didn't add up. So there could have been underlying motive there."

Sara examined her own intentions, too. "In hindsight now, I'm thinking, if I was going to say 'yes' [on their wedding day] and I led him to believe or I told him I was going to say 'yes,' I feel like honestly he would've said 'yes' just because he wanted to make it farther and be a couple that comes out of this," she adds. "That's just my assumption... I wouldn't be surprised."

For his part, Ben said at the reunion that he regretted not having deeper conversations with Sara and denied any wrongdoings.

He said it was his "understanding" that they were "broken up when she left" for Nashville, and added that he "cut it off" because he believed it was the "healthiest way to get over someone."

"That Friday night date, I remember it coming to a pretty certain end," he said of their date before she left for Nashville.
