It has been over a year since Jake Paul suffered the first defeat of his boxing career against Tommy Fury. He was left agitated and frustrated with the result. But he could only mull over it and think about what went wrong. What else could the social media star do differently and not walk out of the arena with regrets? His former trainer explains now.
Paul, 27, went toe-to-toe in the biggest challenge of his boxing career when he picked up Fury, 25, and fought a close fight. However, he lost a split decision, with some believing he did enough to bag the decision. The fight remains hotly debated among fans. One such fan recently posted a clip of the bout, where they pointed out one flaw in ‘Problem Child’s game.
The fan focused on the segments where Paul, at 10-1, caught Fury, at 10-0, with his left hooks but failed to follow up any other punches. They believed throwing combinations would have earned him the win within 3 rounds of the fight. But BJ Flores disagreed. Responding to the post, the former cruiserweight boxer explained that activity won Fury the fight. On the other hand, Paul’s camp laid stress on the defense. It turned out to be a mistake and eventually cost him the fight.
Flores, 45, wrote, “Tommy won 5 rounds based on activity. @jakepaul was told the entire camp defense would win him this fight when the truth is if he lets his hands go he wins easy. Jake won 3 rounds plus the knockdown.”
Since that loss, Paul has focused on honing his skills and has racked up dominating wins. The Cleveland native has already learned his lessons and now he finds himself facing Mike Tyson, which will prove to be another test of his boxing prowess. But there is growing criticism over the matchup. Eddie Hearn has blasted the matchup as “sad” on multiple occasions. It wasn’t long before Paul’s team fired back at the British promoter.

Paul’s manager, Nakisa Bidarian, turned to his Instagram handle and called him out for his involvement in boxing. In addition, Bidarian also slammed Hearn, 45, for letting Katie Taylor on the same card as the co-main event. His comment read, “Eddie, you’re involved, man. Involved in a big way. Katie Taylor, your most celebrated fighter, is the co-main event and it’s her biggest payday as you know.”
The concerns of ‘Iron Mike’s health and age will continue to plague the fight. But it remains to be seen how well Paul will cope with Tyson’s power and boxing skills with his energy and quick movements.
