Dubois, Thompson Help Capitals Overcome Oilers' Offense & Nachos In Weird Win trucc

The Capitals held off the Oilers for a 3-2 victory to open up their road trip.

The Washington Capitals didn't play their best hockey to kick off their road trip against the Edmonton Oilers, but as they've been doing all season, they found a way to get the job done.

Logan Thompson shined again between the pipes — and picked up an assist to boot — and Pierre-Luc Dubois stayed hot en route to a 3-2 victory over the Oilers.

Here are all the takeaways from the team's fifth straight win.

Logan Thompson Carries Capitals Again

Making his fifth consecutive start, Logan Thompson stayed sharp and consistent with another strong showing en route to two points.

Thompson handled Leon Draisaitl and the McDavid-less Oilers' surge early on, as Edmonton held a 25-9 edge in shots on goal after 40 minutes.

The 27-year-old did argue Corey Perry's goal, citing nachos that had been thrown on the ice before the play that arguably should have led to a stoppage. However, play continued and the goal stood, as the nachos didn't interfere with the play.

Thompson finished the night with 31 saves on 33 shots, and also had the secondary assist on Dubois' goal.

In a game where the Capitals struggled to get much going offensively, it was Thompson who helped hold down the fort.

Tom Wilson Hits 20 & Pierre-Luc Dubois Stays Hot, But Offense Needs Work
The Capitals' stars also stayed hot, with Pierre-Luc Dubois putting up another multi-point outing to help power D.C.'s offense and Tom Wilson striking again.

Wilson picked up his 20th goal of the season to even the score in the first, marking his fourth 20-goal season. He's the second player to reach that total this season, matching Alex Ovechkin.

Then, Dubois picked up where he left off; he had the primary assist to set Matt Roy up to give D.C. a 2-1 lead in the second. Then, he got one of his own, scoring his second goal in as many games to pad the team's lead.

Dubois' 34 points in the last 29 games lead the Capitals since Nov. 10.

While the team did manage to get three on the board, Washington needs to get more going offensively at 5-on-5. The team managed just 14 shots on goal, and got just three shots on three power-play attempts.
