Looks like we may not get a new Cardi B album this year after all.
For years, fans have anxiously waited for the “Up” rapper, 31, to follow up her Grammy-winning 2018 debut, Invasion of Privacy, with another album. She’s dropped a string of chart-topping singles and explosive collaborations since then, but has only offered small updates on her next full-length project as of late.
Despite assuring fans in March, “I’m dropping my album this year, so stay tuned for the announcement,” it seems Cardi has since walked back that statement.
On Tuesday, May 14, a fan named Ty on X joked about Cardi’s past promises that she’s dropping a new album in 2024, mockingly writing, "’I'm so excited to put out new music.’ ‘I can't wait to drop my album.’ ‘Wait until I drop this song.’ ‘Album coming soon.’”
This seemed to get Cardi’s attention, as another fan responded to the post, writing to her, “hollering cause you feel hit?” To which she replied in a now-deleted post, per Complex, “No it's just annoying this means a lot to me and it's always a complain and crying wit this p---- ass fanbase.”
Ty then wrote back, “See, your problem is that you want to create a cult, and I'm just too real for that.” Cardi, meanwhile, countered, “No the problem is that you was even complaining when I was dropping music as well always got some s--- to say wit your 3 neck rolls.”
The two continued to argue back-and-forth until another fan on X wrote of Cardi, “It’s time for her to pull back from social media platforms. Her engagement w/ fans is unappreciated. Transparency backfires because of her fans' weirdo entitlement. Cardi doesn't have to interact with them, she chooses to and it's never good enough for them.”
The rap star responded, “Exactly and I tell myself this all the time ..and I hate that I fall back and start interacting again and it bites me in the ass.”
She went on to share a new update about her sophomore project, informing fans, “anyway NO album this year I don't care I'm relaxing this year ..Dropping these features I already committed to and traveling and enjoying my summer.”
The new statement comes just two months after Cardi posted on her Instagram Stories about having “100” unreleased songs she’s been working on for her second album. “I promise y’all this year, I’m not letting my anxiety, I’m not letting what haters say, I’m not letting what fans say [stop me],” she said. “If I do a song, I’m gonna just f—ing drop it.”
“Well, I’ve got no choice because I’m dropping my album this year,” she added.
In her September 2023 cover story for Vogue México y Latinoamérica, the diamond-certified artist discussed rollout plans for her long-awaited follow-up album, saying, “I'm not going to release any more collaborations. I'm going to release my next solo single.”
“Right now, I'm working on the cover art and ideas for the next record because it's definitely coming up,” she added.
On Sept. 7, 2023, just a few weeks after the story was published, Cardi dropped her second collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, “Bongos.” That same month, the two performed it for the first time live at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards.
As promised, Cardi released her next song, a solo single titled “Like What (Freestyle),” at the top of March. She then followed up with her second single of the year, “Enough (Miami),” which dropped on March 15 alongside a sleek music video directed by Patience Harding.
Most recently, the “I Like It” artist attended the 2024 Met Gala on May 6, and celebrated several of her hit songs surpassing 1 billion Spotify streams on the platform’s latest episode of Billions Club: The Series.
