The Capitals kicked off 2025 with an optional skate.
ARLINGTON, V.A. — After ringing in the new year together with a win and team party on Tuesday, the Washington Capitals were given the option to skate on New Year's Day.
Alex Ovechkin, who is three games into his return from a broken leg, was one of those players who chose to take the ice, along with Aliaksei Protas, Brandon Duhaime, Ivan Miroshnichenko, Lars Eller, Jakub Vrana, Dylan McIlrath, Alex Alexeyev and Charlie Lindgren.
Among those not skating was Martin Fehervary, who couldn't finish Tuesday's win over the Boston Bruins after taking a high stick from Tom Wilson in the third period. He is officially listed as day-to-day, and will be re-evaluated on Thursday morning.
The Capitals will face the Minnesota Wild at home on Thursday in what could be Ovechkin's final showdown against Marc-Andre Fleury.
Washington sits first in the Eastern Conference to kick off 2025 with a 25-10-2 record.
