Brad Marchand was the hero in Game 2, scoring in double overtime to give the Florida Panthers a huge 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. The 2025 Stanley Cup Final is now tied 1-1 as the series turns to Sunrise, Florida for Games 3 and 4.
Marchand’s tally came on a semi-breakaway 8:05 into the second overtime. Deking to his backhand, Marchand lost control of the puck as he was stick-checked from behind, but the biscuit managed to slide under Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner. The Panthers bench emptied in a huge celebration.
“To be honest, I blacked out I don’t even know where it went,” Marchand said to TNT afterward. “Obviously a fortuitous bounce and we’ll take it.”
Marchand’s 2OTGWG had a similar look to his shorthanded goal 12:09 in the second period that gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead. The former Bruins captain deked on a breakaway before shooting the puck through Skinner’s pads.
Marchand’s shorty, however, wasn’t enough to close out the Oilers though in regulation. With Skinner pulled for an extra attacker, Corey Perry found a loose puck at his skates and tied the game with 18 seconds remaining in the third period, nearly blowing the roof off Rogers Place.
Perry’s tally was the latest tying goal in the Stanley Cup Final of all time, breaking Tod Sloan’s record from 74 years ago. Sloan scored for the Toronto Maple Leafs with 32 seconds remaining to send Game 5 of the 1951 Stanley Cup Final to overtime. The Leafs’ Bill Barilko then went on to score the Cup-winning goal in OT.
Game 2 started with a bang and featured five different goals in the first period. Panthers forward Sam Bennett started the scoring 2:07 into the game, finding the back of the net on a one-timer during a power play.
The tally gave Bennett the new NHL record for most road goals by a player in a single postseason with 12.
Evander Kane and Evan Bouchard scored consecutive goals in 1:40 to give the Oilers a 2-1 lead. Panthers defenseman Seth Jones tied it. Then Connor McDavid authored the greatest assist of the 2025 postseason, deking twice around Panthers defenders before finding Leon Draisaitl on a power play to give the Oilers a 3-2 lead.
Dmitry Kulikov would tie the game for the Panthers in the second period to tie the game 3-3 before setting up Marchand’s heroics.
Game 3 will be at Amerant Bank Arena on Monday at 8 pm.
