Andrew Mangiapane Poised to Enter Free Agency After Single Season with Capitals trucc

Andrew Mangiapane is likely to have a new home next season.

According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, the 29-year-old winger appears set to hit free agency when his contract with the Washington Capitals expires in a few weeks. Pagnotta also reports that Mangiapane recently switched agents and is now represented by Allain Roy at RSG Hockey.

The Capitals acquired Mangiapane from the Calgary Flames last summer, sending back their 2025 second-round draft selection. Mangiapane played primarily bottom-six minutes with the Caps during the 2024-25 season, averaging 13:02 of ice time per game. He recorded 28 points (14g, 14a) in 81 games.

Mangiapane’s peak season came with the Flames during the 2021-22 campaign, when he notched 55 points (35g, 20a) in 82 games. During that season, Mangiapane received both power-play and penalty-kill ice time and played regularly with Mikael Backlund, Blake Coleman, and Tyler Toffoli. He did not receive the same level of responsibility with the Capitals and spent most of this past season on the wing with a declining Lars Eller.

Per AFP Analytics, Mangiapane’s next contract is projected to be a two-year deal worth $3.83 million per season against the salary cap. The Capitals currently have just $9.375 million in offseason cap space and will likely use a much cheaper player, such as Ryan Leonard, still on his entry-level contract, to fill Mangiapane’s role next year.

The Capitals also have highly touted prospects like Andrew Cristall, Ivan Miroshnichenko, Hendrix Lapierre, and Ilya Protas, who are expected to challenge for NHL roster spots out of training camp. They’ll be joined by names like Ethen Frank, Bogdan Trineyev, and Henrik Rybinski in those camp battles as the Caps seek to get even younger.
