Whitney Sudler-Smith Shows Why His Charleston Home Is "One of the Greatest Houses in America" tram

Over the years on Southern Charm, we've been blessed to see the stunning, historic details of Patricia Altschul's home, aka the Isaac Jenkins Mikell house in Charleston, South Carolina. Now, her son, Whitney Sudler-Smith, who also lives in the home, brings us inside the gorgeous property with a tour you can watch in the video above.

In the clip, Whitney welcomes us into the 9,500-square-foot Greek revival-style mansion "built by British artisans" in the 1850s. The home, which is on the national historic registry, is "one of the greatest houses in America," Whitney states. Gazing upon the exterior's beautiful, enormous columns, Kelly green shutters, and picturesque veranda, it's easy to see why Whitney points to its greatness.

More beauty awaits inside, as Whitney shares glimpses at an alluring array of English country-style rooms designed with the help of Patricia's trusted interior decorator, the late Mario Buatta.

"The idea is to imbue a sense of style and understated comfort," Whitney says in the tour, pointing to Buatta's singular aesthetic as well as other artisanal features like restored crown molding and 18th-century cabinets and chairs.

Inside Whitney Sudler-Smith's Renovated Cottage on Patricia Altschul's property

In addition to showing off the features of the main home, Whitney also put his recently renovated cottage on full display.

On Season 9, Episode 14 of Southern Charm, Whitney revealed he did a "gut renovation" on the place after Patricia's butler, Michael Kelcourse, moved out. (The beloved butler retired after a spinal cord stroke in February 2021.) "I turned the bottom floor into kind of like an understated bar/pub/hangout spot," he shared in a confessional interview on the December 21, 2023 episode.

"I wanted something dark and moody, like a cool speakeasy but comfortable," Whitney shares in the video, revealing the sophisticated, '70s-cool decor that also incorporates art deco details, like the "archways" that hover over the bar shelves and kitchen area.

Whitney notes the dazzling arches were inspired by late 19th/early 20th century German painter Gustave Klimnt.

Upstairs is a cool blue-painted room with vaulted ceilings, a cozy white sectional sofa, and various pops of color and pizzaz. "This is, I think, one of the cooler rooms in the universe," Whitney shares of the space.
