The Washington Capitals fell to the Buffalo Sabres by a final of 8-5 on Sunday afternoon at Capital One Arena.
Alex Ovechkin gets to 890 but Caps drop third in a row
Jakob Chychyrun got things started at 10:06 as Alex Ovechkin and Dylan Strome provided the assists with their 25th and 46th helpers on the season. Tage Thompson tied it at one at 12:49 with a power play goal.
Ryan McLeod at 2:14 gave the Sabres the lead. Chychrun tied it with his second of the game and his 20th goal of the season at 2:46. Alex Tuch and Sam Lafferty would answer at 5:17 and 11:52 respectively.
In the third period 37 seconds in, Aliaksei Protas scored a shorthanded goal for his 30th of the season. Tom Wilson had his 29th assist while Martin Fehervary added his 19th. That would make it a 4-3 game.
Buffalo would answer with a goal from Thompson for his second of the game and that also came on the power play. That happened at 1:28. Then at 5:52 Jack Quinn made it 6-3.
Ovechkin then struck at 9:11 for his 37th of the season and the 890th of his career. Rasmus Sandin notched his 24th assist while Trevor van Riemsdyk added his 20th.
Ovechkin would later get an assist on a Pierre-Luc Dubois power play goal at 14:03 that would make it a 6-5 game. It was PLD's 19th of the season and Dylan Strome would have the secondary assist for his 47th.
At 15:34 the Sabres would answer with Tuch's second goal of the day. At 19:36 Peyton Krebs sealed it with an empty net goal. The Caps led in shots 10-7 in the first period, trailed 8-6 in the second period, outshot the Sabres 13-8 in the third to outshoot Buffalo 29-23.
The Sabres had the edge in face off percentage 52.8 percent to 47.2 percent. Washington went one for two on the power play while the Sabres went two for five on the man advantage. The Caps outhit the Sabres 21-16. The Sabres had 19 blocked shots compared to the Capitals' 12.
Washington had 13 giveaways compared to Buffalo's seven while the Caps had three takeaways with the Sabres having seven. Buffalo would take the season series winning two out of the three meetings.
