Tyra Banks has made a surprise return to TV after stepping down as host of Dancing With The Stars in 2023, and fans are already praising her new role as a 'natural fit'
Tyra Banks has taken fans by storm with a surprise hosting role on a competing network after bidding goodbye to Dancing with the Stars.
After stepping down from the hit ABC dancing competition show in 2023, the 51-year-old model is back on televison as a guest co-host on NBC's Today with Jenna & Friends. Her debut appearance has already been met with rave reviews, with viewers lauding her presenting style and chemistry with Jenna Bush Hager, 43.
Viewers are buzzing with praise, hinting that Tyra Banks might just be the perfect match for the morning talk show. The program's Instagram didn’t miss a beat, sharing a video snippet of Banks' inaugural day with a post: "Day one with @tyrabanks: Tune in tomorrow for more fun! #jennaandfriends."
Enthusiastic comments poured in as fans shared their approval. A fan commented: "Tyra's a natural. There was nothing forced or overbearing on either part. Great show!" Others chimed in with sentiments like "Loved her today. She did great and was funny!" and "She's a professional! It shows! Two stars."
The applause kept coming as someone else posted: "Loved loved loved!!!" and another declared: "Tyra is the best co-host. After watching, I want more of her."
Since Hoda Kotb departed in January, Today with Jenna and Friends has invited a star-studded array of guest hosts, among them big names like Regina Hall, Ciara, Taraji P. Henson, Eva Longoria, and Keke Palmer.
Tyra stepped down from her role as host and executive producer of Dancing With The Stars in 2023, following a wave of backlash. She stated at the time that she believed it was time to move on from the dance competition.
Banks had taken over hosting duties from Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews after their surprising exit at the conclusion of Season 28. She hosted the show solo for Seasons 29 and 30 before being joined by Season 19 winner Alfonso Ribeiro as co-host in Season 31. Ribeiro now holds the position of main host, with two-time champion and former professional dancer Julianne Hough serving as co-host.
Throughout her three-season tenure as host, the former America's Next Top Model presenter consistently made mistakes and upset fans. She also implemented changes to other aspects of the show, including multiple outfit changes for herself and a special host introduction.
She frequently interrupted judges and contestants as they received scores and feedback, and made several errors. A source told The US Sun that DWTS producers felt "Tyra has had struggles warming up to the team, contestants, and certainly the audience. There seems to be a disconnect again with viewers which always raises concerns."
The insider added: "We still get emails and comments about her performance and it is upsetting. The team works extraordinarily hard to deliver the best series every year, but the main focus of fans' upset is the host."
Tyra later revealed to TMZ that after three seasons, she's going to hang up her hosting hat for Dancing with the Stars. She said: "I think it's time. I think my heart and soul are into my business. It's also into producing TV. I really, really want to focus on my business and you can't do that while hosting a show. So you'll see me creating things, not just hosting."
The supermodel-turned-business-mogul is putting her energy into her ice cream brand, SMiZE and Dream, which she kicked off in 2021. Opening up more about her future plans, she shared with the news outlet: "I'm really focused on business, like crazy focused. SMiZE and Dream is global so I feel it's time for me to really focus on my business and my entrepreneurship."
And with classic Tyra confidence, she added a definitive closing statement: "I think it's time to graduate from the dance floor to the stock market floor. Mic drop."
