Todd Reirden is back in the Metropolitan Division with a third team.
The Philadelphia Flyers announced Friday morning that they have hired Reirden to be an assistant coach on new head coach Rick Tocchet’s staff. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jackie Spiegel, Reirden is expected to run the team’s defense and penalty kill units.
Reirden previously served as an assistant and head coach of the Washington Capitals and as an assistant with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He won the 2018 Stanley Cup with the Caps as part of Barry Trotz’s staff.
The Flyers are also hiring Dylan Crawford to be their video coach, a role he filled under Tocchet with the Vancouver Canucks the last three seasons.
“I’m happy to have rounded out my coaching staff by bringing Todd and Dylan on board,” Tocchet stated in a press release. “Todd’s extensive experience across all levels of coaching, as well as his success throughout his career, will play a pivotal role in all facets of our game. Dylan adds another level to our video team in an area that is rapidly expanding and becoming more critical in the outcome of games and the way teams prepare.”
Reirden has been out of a job since the Pittsburgh Penguins dismissed him from his role as associate coach in May of 2024. He had been rumored to become head coach of the KHL’s Avangard Omsk last season but pulled out at the last second, citing family circumstances. Russian sources also linked him to the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl job this offseason.
With the Flyers, Reirden will reunite with a couple of players from his past stints with the Capitals and Penguins: Garnet Hathaway and Ryan Poehling.
Tocchet’s staff behind the bench is now complete with Reirden joining former Capitals forward Jaroslav “Yogi” Svejkovsky and Jay Varaday as assistants. The Flyers finished last in the Metro Division last year in John Tortorella’s final season with the club.
