The Washington Capitals are no one-trick pony, and they proved that to the New York Rangers with a thriller of a win on Wednesday.

In suspenseful fashion, the Capitlas found a way once again, and thanks to Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson, prevailed with a 3-2 OT victory over the Rnagers.

Here are all the takeaways from the win.

Alex Ovechkin Moves Closer To History, Gets Capitals Back In Game

To start the broadcast, TNT analyst Darren Pang referred to Alex Ovechkin as having been a "one-trick pony" for most of his career when it came to scoring goals.

He showed them he's much more than that as he moved even closer to history and got his Capitals back in the game.

After the Rangers did a good job limiting the team's time and space after Pierre-Luc Dubois' early goal, Washington went back to the power play in the third, and Ovechkin wouldn't be denied.

The 39-year-old got to the front of the net and jumped on a puck that Andrew Mangiapane was dribbling in front, firing it past Igor Shesterkin to move just 10 away from passing Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history.

Ovechkin has 10 goals in his last 12 games and 32 on the season, good for a tie for fourth in the league, even after missing 16 games due to a broken leg.

The captain's goal set the tone and helped the offense find a spark after some frustrating moments early on.

Tom Wilson Plays Hero As Second Line Stays Hot

Tom Wilson also played hero at Madison Square Garden, a place where he's not really well-liked, but has made his mark — and continues to do so.

With a minute to go in overtime, Wilson went on a 2-on-1 break with Dylan Strome, who displayed great patience before feeding No. 43 for the overtime winner. It marked his second goal in as many games and fourth goal in his last six overall, as he continues to build on what's been a career year.

The Capitals also got another impressive game from Pierre-Luc Dubois, who continues to thrive with his new team and be a key two-way center.

After scoring his second goal in as many games to get his team on the board courtesy of hard work by the aformentioned Wilson, Dubois was vital at both ends, working with Wilson to generate chances while also making key plays in his own zone to limit the Rangers' offense and shut things down.

Not to be left out, Connor McMichael ppicked up an assist for his fifth point in four games.

Penalty Kill, Lindgren Come Up Big In Win

On the other side of the puck, the Capitals got a strong showing from just about everyone.

The penalty kill deserves quite a bit of credit, coming up big with four huge penalty kills, including a first-period double minor that could have greatly changed the momentum of the game.

In addition to the PK, the defense at 5-on-5 was strong, too, as Washington combined for 19 blocked shots in front of Charlie Lindgren, who also impressed with some big stops to boot. New York was held to just 16 shots in regulation and two in overtime.

Top Shelf Takes

- Dylan Strome picked up a helper and now has 61 points in 62 games this season.

- There were two fights, as Sam Carrick and Brandon Duhaime dropped the gloves before Juuso Parssinen scrapped with Matt Roy.
