“We talked about this multiple, multiple times. We definitely brought this up at one point. I don’t know why it wasn’t shown,” Johnny McIntyre tells PEOPLE of discussing condoms with fiancée Amy Cortés

Love Is Blind‘s Johnny McIntyre is finding humor in the sex talk he had with now-wife Amy Cortés.

Speaking to PEOPLE about their choice to remain celibate before marriage due to their fear of an unwanted pregnancy — and the lengths they were willing to take to make that happen — Johnny, 28, admits that he questioned himself as he watched their conversation back.

“My initial thoughts on watching this was, ‘Did I really not bring up a condom once? Did that not come into the conversation at all?'” he recalls. “Watching it back, I was like, ‘This couldn’t have been the whole conversation. Was it?'”

“And I was like, ‘No, no, no. We talked about this multiple, multiple times. We definitely brought this up at one point. I don’t know why it wasn’t shown in here,'” he notes. “But regardless, it was just a very funny thing of watching it back and [having people] be like, ‘Wow, did he really pass high school health class?'”

Johnny and Amy’s sex life became a hot topic for fans of Love Is Blind when it was revealed that Amy, 28, was not on birth control. Johnny, never having dated anyone who wasn’t on a form of contraception, was fearful that it would result in an unplanned pregnancy, even with the use of condoms. While discussing their options, the couple went as far as to suggest a vasectomy for Johnny before ultimately deciding to simply refrain from having sex until marriage.

Their conversations prompted a ton of chatter among fans, who were baffled as to why the couple felt a condom wasn’t effective enough to prevent a pregnancy. Even their castmates weighed in on the topic, with Amber Desiree “AD” Smith declaring at her and Amy’s joint bachelorette party that she was shocked Amy would “buy the car without the test drive” before insisting that Amy was “f—ing that man.”

Despite their decision, Johnny says there was never a doubt in his mind that Amy was his “person.”

“It felt so natural. And when it came to in the pods, I know I might’ve alluded to this before, but I didn’t really know if I was truly ready to be engaged to Amy before the engagement day on day 8 or day 9,” he explains. “But I woke up that morning, I said, ‘I really want to give it a shot and see how far we can actually take this relationship.’ And when I saw her in person and we were in the Dominican Republic, everything just clicked. It was so perfect. I was like, This is my person.

“There’s going to be no issues,” he continues, “or if there is an issue, we’re going to work through it because that’s exactly what we did in the pods when we were talking about all of our other basically deep conversations.”

As for Amy, she tells PEOPLE she also felt completely comfortable saying “I do” to Johnny without being sexually intimate beforehand.

“We just had great chemistry in all the senses, and I feel like, at least for me, I had so many signs that led up to the fact that Johnny was my person,” she shares. “I was like, ‘I’m not letting this man go.’ It just made sense for me.”

“It sounds corny, but it really was that ‘you know when you know’ [feeling],” she continues. “That’s what we experienced with the both of us. And I feel like with the whole [sex] conversation, we just came from polar opposite backgrounds, where I had never been on birth control and he had just simply never experienced being with a partner that wasn’t on birth control, so it was just really trying to find that middle ground of what worked best for us.”

“We’re already in a fast-paced experience, and we didn’t want the expedite the process further in having a kid,” she adds.

In the season 6 finale, Johnny and Amy both said “I do” at the altar and tied the knot. Fans will learn if they’re still married — and if so, how married life has been treating them — when the Love Is Blind season 6 reunion airs on Wednesday night.
