While Love is Blind season 7 has officially wrapped up, that doesn’t mean that the content from contestants has stopped. Additionally, Love is Blind season 7 has delivered on a wealth of wacky advice and drama surrounding the sleep habits of contestants, which we here at Sleepopolis love.
So far, this season saw Stephen Richardson cheat on Monica Davis while he claims that he was at a sleep study and Garrett Joseman, who is currently married to fellow Love is Blind contestant Taylor Krause, reveal that he uses scotch tape to tape his mouth shut at night.
Now, Garrett is back with even more sleep advice for fans. Recently, the reality TV star took to TikTok to share his advice about why he thinks you should be eating a kiwi (yes, the fruit) before bed. The video, which has amassed 756 thousand views and 43.6 thousand likes, showcases Garrett not only giving his kiwi-based advice but also taking a bite out of a kiwi, skin and all. (1)
If you’re curious about what Garrett’s advice really is, and whether or not it has any merit, read on.
What is Garrett From Love is Blind’s Sleep Advice?
Garrett’s advice is pretty simple: he thinks that should be eating a kiwi before bed. He shares that “it has been shown with humans with sleep problems to improve your sleep quality, efficiency, and longevity.” (1)
He continues to share that there was a study where participants ate Kiwi an hour before bed for four weeks, and this practice “improved their sleep significantly.” (1) Granted, Garrett never mentions any particular study by name in his video, so we don’t know specifically where he got his information.
Garrett goes on to say that you should also be eating the skin, since “it’s supposed to have properties like flavonoids that help improve the quality.” Taylor, who was also a contestant on Love is Blind, questions what flavonoids are from behind the camera, to which Garrett jokingly replies “I bet you’d like to know.” (1)
In case you’re curious, according to the Cleveland Clinic, flavonoids are “a type of phytochemical or plant chemical that are widely distributed in the plant kingdom. They create the vibrant colors of many fruits, vegetables and flowers, and have been found to have a variety of health benefits.” (2)
If you’re anything like me, you might be wondering if this advice is actually backed up by real research. Then never fear, we’ve got you covered.
Is Garrett From Love is Blind’s Advice Legit?
Despite Garrett not naming the study he was getting his advice from in his TikTok, I was able to find what I believe to be the study that he was referencing.
A study from May of 2023 analyzed the effects of kiwi on the sleep and recovery of elite athletes over a four week period. The effects were analyzed based on a questionnaire the athletes were given to establish a baseline and assess how the kiwi’s impacted the athlete’s sleep and recovery. (3)
Following one week of regular sleeping, all athletes in the study received the “intervention”, which was eating “2 medium sized green kiwifruit” one hour before bed for four weeks. (3)
The study found that “the results demonstrated a positive impact of kiwifruit consumption on key aspects of sleep and recovery in elite athletes.” However, one thing to keep in mind is that elite athletes tend to lead very different lives than the regular person, so these results might not be applicable one-to-one. (3)
Granted, kiwis aren’t a particularly dangerous or unsafe food to consume, so if you want to try out Garrett’s advice for yourself, then go ahead and give it a shot. However, if you have specific dietary needs, allergies, or other health complications you’ll want to check in with your doctor before adding a nightly kiwi to your diet.
