The journalist criticised the food industry for their labelling of certain items

Loose Women's Jane Moore asked for the food industry to make a change as she called out "misleading" labelling on food items.

During Monday's (May 12) installment, Christine Lampard led the panel as Brenda Edwards, Jane Moore and Kéllé Bryan joined her in the studio.

As the panel sat down, they opened up about whether parents should be having conversations with their young children about making healthier food choices.

After Brenda shared that there was a lack of choice when she was younger, and you'd eat whatever was put in front of you, Jane agreed and added: "Those younger years, you should 'this is the food I'm giving you and it happens to be healthy food'.

"I think sitting down and having deep and meaningful talks with kids at a very young age about food and healthy choices, whilst it's well-intentioned, I don't know how much of that will go, I think you lead by example."

She continued: "But then of course, a lot of kids are living in a climate where they get home and it's just chips and beige carbohydrates on offer, so you can teach them all you like at school but it's not going to make a difference if their parents aren't on board."

Jane then called for there to be a change, as she said: "It all comes back to the food industry. Pressure keeps being put on parents and onto schools to do all this stuff with kids.

"First of all, let's remove the misleading labelling where they can hide all the bad stuff on the back and put all the good stuff on the front and make it look like a healthy option for your child when it isn't.

"Nobody has time - or the eyesight in my case - to go round the supermarket and read the small print at the back. Put it on the front and it'll make it easier for us to make the right choices."

Christine agreed and reflected on how she gets her children to eat healthy food, admitting that they do happily snack on cucumber or pepper.

She said: "Mine are quite good, it's slightly forced upon them without them knowing. Don't get me wrong if I put a big bowl of sweets or crisps down they'll take them first, but it's a bit of a moderation thing.

"A lot of parents you're busy and there isn't a lot of time to make big homemade meals every night, and we all know it's probably handier and indeed cheaper sometimes to get the rubbish food... You can understand sometimes why children might not be eating as healthy at home."

Loose Women airs on weekdays at 12:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
