Evgeny Kuznetsov is attempting an NHL comeback, but a reunion with the Washington Capitals isn't in the cards.
Kuznetsov's agent Shumi Babayev spoke to La Page Sportive, explaining that his client will not be returning to D.C.
"I don't think so," Babayev said of a potential reunion. "He'd go to Carolina before returning to Washington. I don't see how he could go back."
Kuznetsov, who was originally drafted by the Capitals, saw his tenure with the team end on negative terms. After putting up just 17 points through 43 games to open the 2023-24 season, Kuznetsov entered the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program.
Upon returning, he was placed on waivers and subsequently assigned to the AHL's Hershey Bears before Washington traded him to the Carolina Hurricanes. After the season ended, Kuznetsov terminated the remaining year of his NHL contract to sign in the KHL with SKA St. Petersburg, where he had 37 points in 39 games.
Unhappy with how things played out overseas, Kuznetsov is looking to return to the NHL and has interest from multiple teams, but his agent said he's not rushing anything as he looks to show what he can do.
"He wants to prove to many that he is still Evgeny Kuznetsov. It's hard to find a player like him," Babayev said.
Over 11 years in D.C., Kuznetsov put up 171 goals and 397 assists for 568 points in 732 games.
The Capitals remain in the search for some help up front, but are not keen on further exploring free agency. Instead, their attention is shifting to the trade market while they'll also see which of their prospects can win a roster spot come training camp.
