Justin Sourdif and Declan Chisholm jersey numbers 34 and 47

The Washington Capitals have made two trades for players this summer, acquiring forward Justin Sourdif from the Florida Panthers and defenseman Declan Chisholm from the Minnesota Wild. The two newest Caps selected their jersey numbers with the team on Thursday afternoon.

Sourdif will don number 34 and Chisholm will wear number 47.

Sourdif’s new number is a change from the number 24 that he has worn for the Panthers and AHL’s Charlotte Checkers since turning pro during the 2022-23 campaign. Connor McMichael wears 24 for the Capitals, necessitating the new digits.

The 23-year-old winger has previously worn numbers 42 and 8 in the WHL for the Edmonton Oil Kings and the Vancouver Giants. He also can’t wear either of those with the Capitals, as Martin Fehervary and captain Alex Ovechkin have claimed them.

Sourdif will become the first Capitals player to wear 34 since Jonas Siegenthaler during the 2020-21 season. Other past Caps to wear the number include Jim McGeough, Mikko Leinonen, Bill Houlder, Kent Paynter, Mike Richard, Al Iafrate, Martin Gendron, Jaroslav Svejkovsky, Jakub Cutta, Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre, Mathieu Biron, Boyd Kane, and Alexander Urbom.

Unlike Sourdif, Chisholm is sticking with a number, 47, which he has worn the last two seasons for the Wild and Winnipeg Jets. No Capitals player took the number this past year after Beck Malenstyn was traded to the Buffalo Sabres.

Chisholm has also previously worn number 45 with the Jets and wore number 20 in the OHL for the Peterborough Petes. Both of those numbers are currently vacant on the Capitals after Lars Eller’s departure via free agency.

The 25-year-old defenseman will be only the fourth Capitals player to wear 47, following Malenstyn, Karl Alzner, and Bryan Muir.
