George Groves thinks Jake Paul isn’t a legitimate boxer
YouTuber Jake Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) is back in the ring this weekend against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (54-6-1, 34 KOs), but former world champion George Groves still isn’t convinced he qualifies as a “legitimate boxer”, suggesting he should fight someone from reality TV instead.
Talking to casinobeats.com, Groves questioned, “Is Jake Paul still trying to convince people that he’s a legitimate boxer?
He then answered his own rhetorical question, “You’re not! He’s not a legitimate boxer!“
He explained further, “You picked someone [Julio Cesar Chavez Jr] who was a professional boxer whose dad was a legend of professional boxing. I’m not sure how big Chavez is on the celebrity scene, how much of a famous name he is, because otherwise why have you picked him? He might as well pick someone from Love Island or something!”
28-year-old Jake Paul has experienced 12 professional boxing bouts, but only managed to fight a couple of active boxers so far.
The first legitimate pro boxer he challenged was Tommy Fury, resulting in a split decision loss after an eighth-round knockdown made the decision closer.
He knocked out both Andre August and Ryan Bourland in one round, but only August was active, as Bourland hadn’t fought in over 18 months.
Paul’s last fight came against 58-year-old Mike Tyson almost 20 years after his retirement from boxing. Tyson was able to compete in the first round, but then faded dramatically, as expected for someone nearing 60.
Now “The Problem Child” has picked yet another boxer that’s way over the hill in Chavez Jr., who has only fought once in the past three-and-a-half years.
Aged 39, 11 years Paul’s senior, Chavez Jr. was a world champion 13 years ago in 2012, when Jake was 15.
