Denise addressed the backlash to her accent on Loose Women

The Loose Women panellist addressed rumours after her appearance on US chat show Watch What Happens Live

Denise Welch has hit back at trolls after being accused of faking her accent.

The Loose Women panellist baffled some fans during an appearance on Andy Cohen's Watch What Happens Live while she was in America.

Making her debut on an American chatshow, clips went viral of Denise appearing to speak with an American accent.

She had been accused of making her accent “too posh”, with one person writing on X: “So why has Denise completely changed her accent? She sounds so much more posh. Trying to impress I see." Another questioned: "What happened to her accent? WTF."

"I can’t get over Denise’s new non-binary accent. Her diversity. We’ve lost her to the states I fear," someone else had written, while another called it a “transatlantic accent” and yet another joked they thought it was AI.

Being quizzed about her apparent change in accent on Loose Women on Thursday by co-stars Katie Piper and Nadia Sawalha, Denise fumed: “You know, it really bugs me that, because in this country people go, ‘Er she’s lost her Geordie accent’, I never talked like Gazza!

“I never talked like that in my life,” she added, in a strong Geordie accent.

Denise went on: “And then people say I was doing an American accent! Rubbish!”

As her co-panellists insisted she did appear to switch up her accent, Denise confessed: “I can hear an inflection there, and having said that, Lincoln knows exactly who I am on the phone to because apparently if I have spoken to a friend who is from Liverpool I’m going like that [in a Liverpudlian accent].

“And years ago my ex-husband Tim was doing a show in Australia and said to somebody, ‘We’ve been here two days and our lass picks up the phone to someone and goes ‘Hello?’ [in an Australian accent]’.”

Talking about her talkshow experience, Denise elsewhere said she “honestly loved it” and “couldn’t believe” she was on the show.

While on Watch What Happens Live, Denise revealed what she really thinks of Taylor Swift, her son Matty Healy's ex, and shared her support for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

She said: "Well, I have a very different view to a lot of people. On the show that I do at home, called Loose Women, I'm the only one who flies the Prince Harry and Meghan flag and I know them. I've met a few of the Royals over the years but I have never met them.

"I just think that the amount of bullying by the press, both British and American, that that woman gets.... Remember she was in those rooms as a young black American woman. She had a big voice in Unicef and in the United Nations and she was in a lot of those big rooms before Harry was.

"I just kind of try to fly the flag a bit. You've got to remember that this is a boy who was forced at 12-years-old to walk behind his mother's coffin. His dad had been unfaithful and he grew up in that world. I think for him to want to say his piece is something quite admirable."

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
