Craig Laughlin posted a brief but encouraging update on his recovery from open-heart surgery during the Washington Capitals’ game against the Utah Hockey Club, Sunday.
Laughlin, who underwent successful open-heart surgery last Tuesday to repair a bicuspid aortic valve and a blocked left anterior descending artery, is headed back to his Maryland home on Monday — six days after he went under the knife.
Laughlin wrote, “Hey Caps fans! Thx so much for the love, support, prayers & well wishes. Open heart surgery is no joke & the hardest thing I’ve ever done. But I am looking forward to heading home tmrw and continuing on my road to recovery and coming back stronger than ever #lockerstrong ”

The Capitals’ popular color commentator’s recovery from the hours-long operation was difficult, but he’s continuing to meet his goals set by doctors. Laughlin left ICU on Wednesday night and he’s remained as feisty as ever with family and doctors. Alan May relayed on a Capitals telecast that when Laughlin was originally woken up from surgery and asked where he was, he replied, “at the damn hospital.”
