Nic Dowd signed a two-year contract extension with the Washington Capitals on Wednesday morning.
Behind the scenes, Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery announced the new deal to players privately while the team did film review. Caps’ social media posted the moment on social media.

Spencer Carbery: This young man in this room…
Alex Ovechkin: Me?
(Laughing)
Spencer Carbery: This one’s not about you, O! He has poured his heart and soul giving everything he has to this organization over the last seven years of his career. And pretty special to be able to retire a Capital.
(Carbery then puts up an image of Nic Dowd on the video board)
(The Capitals give a standing ovation to Nic Dowd)
(Dowd nods and then cracks open a beer and starts drinking as the team chants “Judy!”)
The most notable thing here, beyond Dowd chugging what appears to be a Coors and doing some day drinking, is Carbery’s comment that the checking-line centerman will “be able to retire a Capital.” Dowd, who signed the deal at age 34, turns 35 in May and will be 37 at the end of this contract.
The chugging too is just the latest beer-related celebration in April for this Capitals team. The Caps also gave Alex Ovechkin beer showers after he tied and then broke Wayne Gretzky’s goals record.
