The Capitals prospective blueliner will get a fresh start elsewhere.
The Washington Capitals and defenseman Hardy Häman Aktell are parting ways, as the blueliner was placed on unconditional waivers.
Per The Associated Press' Stephen Whyno, Washington waived Häman Aktell in order to terminate his contract.
Häman Aktell was set to become a restricted free agent this summer after he'd signed a one-year, two-way extension this past July after joining the Capitals organization ahead of the 2023-24 season.
The 6-foot-3, 216-pound got six games up at the NHL level last season, but has spent the majority of his time with the organization down with the AHL's Hershey Bears while dealing with injuries and inconsistencies in his game, though he stood out in the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs to help Hershey secure its second consecutive title.
Through 27 games this season, Häman Aktell has just nine assists while falling further down Washington's defensive dpeth chart amid the additions of Jakob Chychrun and Matt Roy.
It's unclear if it's a mutual contract termination or waht it means for the Swede's future, though it's possible he could choose to return overseas or get a fresh start with a new organization.
