The Capitals are hoping Muggli continues to develop his game playing against grown men overseas.

The Washington Capitals are sending Leon Muggli back to Switzerland for the upcoming season, as he's been loaned to Ev Zug of the top Swiss League to continue his development.

Muggli was taken in the second round (52nd overall) by the Capitals in this year's draft. He had good meetings with the team but was still surprised that he was taken by D.C.

The 18-year-old packs a lot of promise as a two-way defenseman who is already displaying maturity beyond his years. He is coming off a strong rookie season in the Swiss League, where he put up 12 points and a plus/minus of plus-13 in 42 games with EV Zug playing against grown men.

"I'm calm under pressure," Muggli said at the draft. "I think such players Gustav Forsling and Josh Morrissey are good comparables."

Going back to EV Zug will continue to prepare Muggli for the intensity of the NHL, as he'll keep playing against bigger, faster opponents and developing his playing style.

Muggli describes his playing style as a two-way style of play, but he's praised for the way he thinks the game and his instincts, especially when defending in his own zone.

"I would say (I'm) more of a defensive two-way defenseman," Muggli explained. "Good first pass, likes to follow the rush, good skating abilities, good hockey IQ."

As Washington continues to invest in its defensive depth for the future, Muggli is a good rising star to have in the system and could be a lot like Martin Fehervary when he eventually makes it to the NHL.

“You think you’re closer to the NHL when you play against grown-up men, but I think I still have a long way in front of me," Muggli said. "Hard work, but I think you’re closer to the NHL when you play against grown-up men.”
