Bogdan Trineyev Makes Bold Move, Switches Jersey Number to 87 with the Washington Capitals trucc

Bogdan Trineyev could see games with the Washington Capitals next season, but if he does, he will not be rocking the number 88 he’s previously worn.

Thursday, Trineyev returned from Russia for the Capitals’ informal skates and debuted his new digits: 87.

Trineyev was seen wearing the new number on his helmet as he practiced at MedStar Capitals Iceplex.

Trineyev surrendered his number 88 to Capitals’ offseason acquisition Andrew Mangiapane, who Brian MacLellan got in a trade with the Calgary Flames for a Capitals’ 2025 second-round draft pick.

Mangiapane has worn 88 his entire time in the NHL, receiving the number during his first camp with Calgary.

“I’m happy that it wasn’t 87 or something like that,” Mangiapane said somewhat ironically to The Athletic in 2023.

He used to wear 26 while in junior with the OHL’s Barrie Colts and then in the AHL with the Stockton Heat.

Only one other Capitals player has worn 88 in team history, defenseman Nate Schmidt, from 2013 through 2017.

Trineyev, who also wore 88 during his time in the KHL with Dynamo Moscow, played with number 44 on his back while with the Hershey Bears during his full rookie season in 2023-24.

The 22-year-old, Voronezh, Russia native will now try to become the third player in Capitals history to wear number 87 for the team in NHL games. Previously, popular rugged enforcers, Donald Brashear (2006-2009) and Liam O’Brien (2014-2018) rocked the number in DC.

Sidney Crosby was the only player to wear 87 in the NHL last season.
