American Idol Season 23 returned on Sunday night, as the Top 10 took the stage for their chance to move on. At the end of the night, the Top 8 was revealed following America’s vote, as we had to say goodbye to the show’s only two remaining Platinum Ticket winners.
American Idol Top 8 Contestants Revealed
The theme of Sunday’s episode was Ladies’ Night, as the Top 10 singers took on hits by female artists such as Adele and Beyoncé. A standout performance came from Jamal Roberts, who sang a cover of “Undo It” by American Idol judge Carrie Underwood. Jamal belted out the lyrics, while this week’s celebrity mentor Miranda Lambert cheered him on from the sidelines
At the end of the song, Jamal threw away his cowboy hat, which was caught by judge Luke Bryan. Jamal revealed that it was meant for Underwood, so Bryan threw it her way. Underwood admitted that there was an issue with the lyrics in Jamal’s performance, but added, “Who cares?!” She called it “so much fun.”
Another amazing performance from Sunday’s episode came from Gabby Samone, who sang “I Was Here” by Beyoncé. Gabby showed off her powerhouse voice, bringing incredible emotion to the song. The judges gave her a standing ovation, encouraging America to vote for her.
Both Jamal and Gabby made it into the Top 8, along with John Foster, Breanna Nix, Mattie Pruitt, Josh King, Slater Nalley, and Thunderstorn Artis. These singers will return to the stage on Monday night for another chance to stay in the competition.
Two Platinum Ticket Winners Eliminated
Last week, Platinum Ticket winner Filo was eliminated from the competition, leaving Kolbi Jordan and Canaan James Hill as the only two recipients of the honor left in the competition. This week, in a shocking turn of events, both Kolbi and Canaan were eliminated
For Sunday’s performance, Kolbi took on a cover of “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac, while Canaan James Hill sang “Love Wins” by Carrie Underwood. Both singers sounded great, earning praise from the judges. Bryan said Kolbi’s performance showed off her personality, while Underwood got emotional over Canaan’s performance of her song.
With all three Platinum Ticket winners eliminated, this week’s winner is guaranteed to be a singer who didn’t earn the coveted honor in their audition. This is in contrast to last season, when Platinum Ticket recipient Abi Carter won the show.
Abi Carter Returns to the Show’s Stage
Speaking of Abi Carter, the American Idol Season 22 winner returned to the stage on Sunday night to perform her new song “Burned.” The 22-year-old sounded incredible on the original track, which she sang while wearing a glamorous gold gown.
Carter released her debut album, Ghosts in the Backyard, last year. She recently released a deluxe version of the album, featuring new tracks including “Burned” and “Block My Number.” The singer will also be going on tour later this year, with several dates lined up around the United States.
